There is an old saying, "If you want to predict the future, plan it" has never been more true and more
compelling in THE NEXT BEST THING.
Carl Ciliberti takes us on two journeys into the future;the unraveling of the microscopic with
biochemical wisdom that reveals a New Human, the other, the macroscopic matter with metaphysical
wisdom that forsees the possibility of meaningfulness and purposefulness of human existence in a
universe that continues to create itself and be created by choices people make.
How does one plan the future? The author masterfully through his characters bring them alive on each
page conceptualizing change from the present circumstances with everything connecting, interacting and
interelating.
At the end of your read of 'planning futures' you will be forced by this Science Fiction to sit back
in your favorite chair and contemplate the common destiny of creation and your maximum participation
with others and all the systems of matter and energy.
Do you want a preferred future? That is the hidden question that pulsates in the minds and feeling
of all the main characters. Their answer is an overwhelming yes. How to they achieve it? Read their
plan and share their vision with thoughtful assumptions.

Book Description:
Spindrift is a collection of true seagoing anecdotes about the experiences of three
brothers, each of whom served aboard U.S. Navy ships during his service. One of the
authors was a Torpedoman Second Class on U.S.S. Barbero, a guided missile diesel
submarine in the early 1950s. The second author served as a seagoing Marine Corporal
aboard the aircraft carrier, U.S.S. Wasp during the 1960s. The third author, a career
Naval Aviator, served aboard a number of aircraft carriers over a 33 year career
ultimately retiring as a Rear Admiral. The three authors present to the reader three
different perspectives and three different writing styles about three different
periods in the history of the U.S. Navy. The perspectives are the submarine service,
the seagoing Marine Corps aspects of life aboard an anti-submarine warfare aircraft
carrier and the attack carrier Navy. The book is divided into four parts: the first
deals with life aboard diesel submarines in the 1950s as well as nuclear-powered
submarine operations in the 1970s. The torpedoman, Dan and his aviator brother, Paul
provide the anecdotes in this part. Part II deals with surface ships operations over
a thirty year period (1952-1982) and is written exclusively by brother, Paul, the
aviator. Part III deals with aspects of aircraft carrier operations over the same
thirty year period and is written by the Marine, Bob and his aviator brother, Paul.
Part IV deals with women in Naval Aviation and the anecdotes contained therein come
from the experiences of the aviator. The underlying theme of the stories stresses
the notion that the sea services seem to contain more than their share of genuine,
all-American characters., over 40 b/w photographs, 6" x 9".
Dan is currently editing
another book which is a huge collection of recollections of submariners transititioning
from diesel to nuclear submarines.

Reviewer: Larry Hobson (see more about me) from Palmdale California, Author of "The Day of the Rose."
This is one of the best and true accounts of World War II and the fighting that took place in the
Phillipines. The story is told through the eyes of some of the men that were there and how their
lives were affected and changed. What they felt like as the Phillipines fell into the hands of
the enemy forces in 1942. Men like, Mansfield Young and Manny Eneriz and their experiences on what
was called the Bataan Death March and their will to live while others lost their lives on the long
march. Any one that could survive what the Japanese put these men through, must have had bodies of
steel or they sat on the right hand side of God. The death march was only the beginning of their long
ordeal and the book tells the complete story.

Cruisers For Breakfast by John Mansfield
Cruisers For Breakfast: War Patrols of the USS Darter & USS Dace
302 Pages, 26 b/w photos, hardcover w/4-color dust jacket.
"Cruisers for Breakfast" epitomizes the actions, triumphs, tragedies and personal accounts of two
gallant World War II submarines and the members of their crews at the height of the Pacific War. In
October of 1944, Darter (SS-227) and Dace (SS-247) encountered the Imperial Japanese Navy en route
through the Philippines to attack the Americans. The massive enemy task force, bound for the Battle
of Leyte Gulf, totaled 32 warships! During the night, Darter sank one cruiser and damaged another.
Dace torpedoed two more. Before the sun came up the next morning, Darter unexpectedly ran aground and
had to be abandoned. Rescued by Dace, the Darter crew scrambled to safety while the Japanese Navy
searched for the two subs, just a short distance away! Here for the first time is the entire story of
these two famous WWII subs and their desperate battle against the powerful Japanese Navy. This is a
first edition (1997) hardback, with dust jacket. Written by John G. Mansfield, Jr., a former submariner,
who earned his dolphins aboard the WWII sub Menhaden (SS-377). All books will be personally signed by
the author.

Submarine Diary: The Silent Stalking of Japan
by Corwin Mendenhall, I. J. Galatin (Introduction)

Paperback: --Publisher: United States Naval Inst.; (April 1995)

A realistic day-by-day account of US submarine warfare..., March 5, 2001
Submarine Diary provides a realistic day-by-day account of US submarine warfare in WWII.
When I find a topic I like -- and WWII submarine warfare is one -- I like to read all about it and
watch movies so that I understand and enjoy the topic to it's fullest. I also like to make comparisons
between the various works. In this light, Submarine Diary fills in some gaps, provides a different
perspective than some of the other books, and reinforces some topics in other books. For example, the
faulty Mk-10 torpedoes discussed in War in the Boats is present here as well, which solidifies this
as a real deficiency and not as 1 writer's excuse.
The only criticism I have of this book is it too short. It left me wanting more. But it appears to
be an accurate depiction of the daily routine of a submarine in combat; plenty exciting with
intermittent periods of boredom. A more fleshed out version would be even better.
"The book gives the reader a unique look into the daily operations of a WWII Fleet submarine
stalking Japanese ships in the Pacific. The insight is unique because although Mendenhall was an
officer aboard the USS Sculpin and then the USS Pintado, he was "an enlisted man's officer" and he
tells the story of his patrols aboard these submarines from that perspective. I enjoyed reading this
book because at one moment it relates the daily grind of serving on a sub and the next moment, it
explodes with action as an enemy ship is spotted and attacked. I recommend this book to anyone who is a
WW II submarine junkie because it is an account of real men and real times.

Thunder Below!: The Uss Barb Revolutionizes Submarine Warfare in World War II
by Eugene B. Fluckey
Trade Paperback: 466 pages --Publisher: Univ of Illinois Pr (Trd); (August 1997)
ISBN: 0252066707
The USS Barb was the Navy's most successful submarine in WW II. And Adm. Fluckey is the last surviving Medal of Honor
holder from the Submariner Service in WWII. The Barb operating mainly in the South China Sea,
the Formosa Strait and the forever mysterious Sea of Okhotsk, the Barb sank at least 29 Japanese ships
and climaxed its final patrol with an audacious commando raid on land during which the crew destroyed a
16-car train. This was the sole U.S. military landing on Japanese soil during the war. Drawing on ship's
logs, letters, interviews, diaries and his own memory, Fluckey, a retired rear admiral, reconstructs
every attack by and against the sub from its eighth through its 12th and last patrol. This was the
15-month period when he served as the Barb's skipper, winning the Medal of Honor and four Navy Crosses\
for his daring exploits. Fluckey is a fine writer with a lively, colorful style. His book is packed
with action and suspense and is rich in details about the day-today operation of a submarine in combat.
Adm. Fluckey is a USSVI member of the Chesapeake Base.

Torpedoman by Ron Smith
Written about a WWII submarine by someone who served on it. He tells you
how it really was from an enlisted man's point of view. A true story in
it's detail about the submarine he served on and some real "sea stories."
Ron details his life on the Seal and the terror of being depth charged in WWII.
He softens it with details of some great liberty times. The following is a review from
a WWII CO:
"The U.S. Submarine force in World War II made a unique contribution to winning the
war in the Pacific against the Japanese Empire. At the beginning of the war not one
submariner had sunk an enemy ship. World War II submarines were less than 2% of the
Navy, yet they accounted for 55% of the Japanese tonnage sunk. By the end of the war
the Pacific Submarine Force had sunk 1,178 merchant ships and 214 Japanese Navy ships
-- the oil supply from Indonesia had been terminated. How was this possible? Read
this book.
This book is written by one of the few enlisted submarine authors from World War II.
Ron 'Warshot' Smith has "been there and done that." This is Ron Smith's World War II
story. With the permission of his parents, he enlisted in the Navy the day he graduated from the 11th grade in Hammond, Indiana, in 1942, at 17 years of age. Six months later he was aboard the submarine USS Seal (SS-183) in Mare Island Naval Shipyard, getting ready for his first war patrol. The Japanese Empire was doomed and didn't even know it. America mobilized fifteen million young men like Ron Smith and demanded unconditional surrender of her enemies.
Three years later both Germany and Japan were decimated and surrendered unconditionally.
This is the story of Ron's life and of his shipmates in Seal, as well as their equally
hazardous liberty parties ashore -- warts and all. This book vividly describes what a
300-plus depth charge attack is like from the After Torpedo Room of a fleet boat in
World War II. Ron's battle station was between four torpedo tubes in the After Torpedo
Room. He was connected with all of the compartments through the sound-powered telephone
system. He reported to the Captain in the Control Room. When the last depth charge was
dropped on Seal the count was 367. When the day was done Seal was in a shambles. The
Captain ordered "Battle Surface" rather than take more punishment from the Japanese
destroyers. He told the crew they would die fighting on the surface rather then die
in the next attack by the destroyers. Ron's Battle Surface assignment was to man a
20mm gun on the after deck of the submarine -- a suicide assignment against enemy
destroyers. You must read TORPEDOMAN to see how Seal (and Ron) survived.
Ron is a member of USSVI and SVWWII and a member of Lockwood Internet Base.
